DSSE 2024 Hot Topics: Green Signage and LED Technologies

The growing importance of Green Signage

The matter of green signage, having its own stage for the very first time, was very well received this year - a clear sign that sustainability is becoming increasingly important. The fact that green signage is not about reporting progress but about transforming companies in a sustainable way was particularly emphasised, especially considering the new CSRD guidelines which require even more companies than before to report on sustainability targets.

Miguel Vieira, Service Portfolio Manager at Sharp/NEC, was a member of the discussion panel dedicated to green signage. He explained that preventative service measures should be considered in a sustainability context, as regular maintenance can significantly extend the service life of digital signage. By doing so, experts can recognise issues such as overheating or outdated firmware proactively, rectifying potential concerns before they impact longevity and performance.

Energy-saving LED Technologies

Innovations in the field of energy-saving LED technologies, including market forecasts for LED and LCD Displays were the main topic of another discussion panel. LED displays in particular are expected to gain more market share in the coming years, whilst the market for LCD displays is more likely to shrink.

In addition, it has been predicted that energy-saving LED technologies, such as flip-chip, will be a key element of premium offerings in the future, while traditional production processes will tend to be found at the lower end of the market in terms of quality.

At DSSE, Sharp/NEC demonstrated how smart content delivery impacts the energy efficiency of LED. Darker backgrounds can save up to 50% energy compared to bright backgrounds. The LED-RPS-CL-R Remote Power Switch adds a remote power control to any LED wall allowing it to be powered down when not in use for zero energy consumption and safely powered up again by limiting the inrush current.

Ideal content display with direct view LED

Tobias Augustin, Manager Product Management at Sharp/NEC, sees Direct View LED (dvLED) technology as particularly future-proof, as it can withstand the demands of rapidly changing content and video development, as well as enabling large-format visualisation in very bright environments.

According to our experts, dvLED technology is the ideal medium to display advertisement content, impressing with vibrant eye-catching imaging performance.

LED technology is also able to show application-critical information in extreme detail, even in very bright situations making it suitable for control room environments. At Sharp/NEC, we are observing an increasing demand for precisely coordinated bundles. These are particularly recommended for sensitive areas such as control rooms, but are also progressively being used in other sectors - especially because of their ergonomics, high reliability, as well as simple operation.

Requirements for Digital Signage keep evolving

The demands for development and service are constantly rising. The hype surrounding content and speed in particular has enabled dvLED technology to prove itself as the basis for sophisticated installations. The extremely versatile capabilities, such as the reproduction of dynamic images in bright colours or the display of detailed information, show that dvLED is the right solution in many different contexts.
